Managing impacts to environmental assets from resource development  

CDM Smith has supported Shell QGC since 2019 to understand the potential impact of terrestrial groundwater dependent ecosystems (GDEs) in their Surat basin Coal Seam Gas (CSG) development area. This has included multiple specific studies (below) including field investigations, numerical modelling, eco-hydrogeological conceptualizations, risk assessments, and a mitigation of pre-feasibility studies. Cutting edge approaches to GDE identification were employed using remote sensing to improve the management of these important ecosystems.  

Conceptualization of complex eco-hydrogeological systems 

Combining technical expertise in groundwater systems, ecological processes, surface water interaction and mining impacts to effectively conceptualize complex eco-hydrogeolocial systems.

Remote sensing approaches to GDE identification 

Cutting-edge methodologies utilizing satellite / drone and LiDAR datasets to identify GDEs and characterize vegetation function across pace and time.  

Monitoring of GDEs and groundwater 

Monitoring of the relationships between vegetation, climate, and groundwater in remote environments to determine condition change induced by climate compared to mining activities.

Regulatory communication 

A collaborative approach to engage with and communicate complex environmental concepts to regulators, facilitating successful approval and compliance with legislation.

Shell QGC has worked collaboratively with the CDM Smith project team over several years to develop their approach to assessing risk to GDEs from CSG development in Queensland and meeting regulatory and reporting goals. They have valued the project management from CDM Smith, as well as our ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to stakeholders and regulators. We understand how to design eco-hydrogeological studies to meet the requirements of the relevant legislation, and work with Shell QGC to ensure ecological assets in their development areas are protected in the future.
